A Podcast About Encouragement

Building One Another

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. I Thessalonians 5:11

Ministry By Walking Around!

Dear Friend,

Jesus spent much of his time walking from place to place and touching people he met along the way.

For example, when he entered Jericho, he encountered Zacchaeus up in a tree, "Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” Luke 19:5

As he left Jericho, Jesus walked near blind Bartimaeus sitting by the road, who called to him, “Have mercy on me,” and Jesus said to his disciples, “Call him [Bartimaeus].” Mark 10

Jesus constantly ministered just by walking around!

Every encounter created the possibility of offering a word of encouragement or some other life-supporting, life-changing act.

Sometimes we offer ministry without moving. People come to us in our home, our office or walk by us in the park or in our yard or wherever we may be sitting.

At the same time, adopting the practice of Jesus, we may do ministry by walking around as we go where people are.

As we encounter them in the neighborhood, in a store, in their offices, at a coffee shop – we, too, have the possibility of offering a word of encouragement or some other life-supporting, life-changing act.

Ask our Lord for his “people eyes,” to see the people you encounter as you walk around as those he wants to touch through you!.

Show Notes

  1. Tom Peters introduced the concept of MBWA - Management by Walking Around - in his book "In Search of Excellence." The idea is that by going to people we have the opportunity to advance our relationships and our work. Following this pattern, we see that Jesus offered Ministry by Walking Around.
  2. When you walk - in your neighborhood, in your office, at the grocery, in a store, are you paying attention to the people you encounter, or are you focused on your task at hand?
  3. If you encounter someone on a walk, what are things you can say, from the simple "beautiful day" to the deeper "How is it with you?"
